The Non-observance of Maxims on Indonesia Morning Show “Ajarkan Anak Menabung Sejak Kecil”

Abstract

This study was examined the non-observance of maxims in speakers’ utterances on the episode “Ajarkan Anak Menabung Sejak Kecil” which is broadcasted in Indonesia Morning Show, TV One. It is to know whether the speakers exploit or fail to observe a maxim in their utterances. It is also to know what kinds of non-observance of maxims found in their utterance and their purposes to do that exploitation. In this study, the researcher used descriptive qualitative as the method to interpret the data. The data were taken from Indonesia Morning Show Youtube-channel which has broadcasted on 19^th December, 2014. In this case, the researcher watched and took a note the speakers’ utterances which contain the non-observance of maxims. Then, she counted each utterance produced by the speakers and classified it into types of non-observance of maxims based on Gricean theory. Therefore, the researcher made a conclusion which is representative on the finding and discussion. Additionally, the findings show that floating maxim takes the dominant one. In this case, the speakers often flout the maxim of quantity followed by maxim of manner. Thus the floating maxim of quality and manner take the rest position. Only a few flouting of quality and relation found in speakers’ utterances. Therefore, the second position after floating maxim is opting out. In this case, the researcher found that there are six occasions when the speakers are not willing to cooperate because of many reasons. Then, the violation maxim also is appeared even only in two occasions. Hence, from those finding, there are several reason why the speakers exploit or fail to observe the Grice’s maxims.
